Health Savings Accounts PTFCU continually seeks ways to offer smart products and choices to our members.  Catch the wave known as HSAs.  With employers, individuals, and the government all seeking cost-effective alternatives to traditional health care coverage, HSAs are becoming more widespread.  These types of accounts are designed to cover qualified medical expenses and provide tax benefits.  HSAs allow workers and their employers to set aside money to cover the workers' future health expenses.  PTFCU will be offering Health Savings Accounts in the near future and more information about the product will be forthcoming.  Here are some points to consider. To be eligible for participation in an HSA, you must be covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) through your employer. Annual contributions are deductible from federal taxes up to the maximum allowable amount.  There are maximums based on single or family coverage. There are many kinds of qualified medical expenses. Qualified withdrawals are free from federal income tax. Dividend earnings (if any) are free from federal taxes. Some states allow tax deductibility and do not tax dividends earned.  Consult a tax advisor for details. Access the funds by writing an HSA check or visit one of our branches.  Funds remain in the account from year to year; just like an IRA.  You are not penalized at year end for not using the funds.
